The Tuscola Area Airport near Caro is one of the fastest growing General Aviation airports of its size in the entire State of Michigan. The Tuscola Area Airport is one of the few airports in Michigan owned and operated by an Airport Authority. The members include the Village of Cass City, Indianfields Township, Elkland Township, and the City of Caro The Airport Authority board meets on the second Thursday of each month.
As of 2010, more than 60 businesses utilize airport services on a regular basis. The Tuscola Area Airport helps to spur growth in the area and if not for the airport many businesses and their suppliers would not have locations in Tuscola County. The Airport is efficiently servicing the area and playing a major role in being an economic development tool. An important benefit of a local airport that services the transportation of business and their suppliers is for the infrastructure to be in place for enterprises to expand and provide betters service for their customers.
The Tuscola Area Airport is the only airport located in Tuscola County. 60 planes are based at the airport. These pilots from the local area generate revenue streams for businesses in Tuscola County by the purchase of goods, services, and making capital expenditures for the development of local businesses. The pilots enjoy the convenience of the airport location, as the facility services both fuel and hangar customers. The Airport Authority has upgraded the hangar capacity substantially to meet the demand of pilots.
The Airport Authority has been involved in many capital improvement projects totallng over $4 million since 1993. A master plan was developed regarding the future growth of the airport. These projects include runway rehabilitation, township road realignment, taxiway improvements, the purchase of new fuel tanks, the purchase of state land for expansion, newer parking lots and a new administration building.
The clearing of trees was completed for the safety of the flying public and the installation of an automated weather observation system gives pilots the latest weather information for navigating the skies.
All in all the Airport Authority has the goal and vision to make the airport user friendly to add a valuable value-added resource for Tuscola County communities.
